Kim Mulkey says this coaching decision allowed LSU to rally v Ole Miss
The decision that Kim Mulkey felt ultimately won LSU women's basketball the game over Ole Miss, she initially thought it may have been too late.
Ole Miss led the Tigers, 69-59, with 6:24 remaining. The shift to a bigger lineup that featured senior Amiya Joyner and sophomore Kate Koval inside coupled with throwing different defenders and looks at Rebels' leading scorer Cotie McMahon sparked the comeback. LSU went on a 19-1 run to close out the game and survive, 78-70, inside Sandy and John Black Pavilion Thursday night.
With the victory, LSU (23-4, 9-4) has grabbed sole possession of fourth place in the Southeastern Conference standings, meaning it's in the driver's seat for the double bye at the conference tournament in a couple of weeks.
Junior star guard MiLaysia Fulwiley turned in a career high 26 points, scoring 22 in the second half to help will the Tigers to the rally over Ole Miss (21-7, 8-5).
Kim Mulkey on the coaching decision that allowed LSU women's basketball to rally vs Ole Miss
"I think a decision we made as a staff to go big was very effective. I just thought there were taking my two young freshmen off the drive and that's why I didn't go big thinking that, you know, they could move laterally a little bit better. What was killing us was second, third shots and I thought Kate and (Joyner) were just solid together. That was a big decision and I'm not sure I ever thought I would do that in this game tonight. But I did and it worked."
Kim Mulkey on what LSU did differently defensively on Cotie McMahon
"We mixed it up. We went to that 3-2 zone. Might have stayed in it a little too long. They hit some three's when we were in it and then we went back man, just trying to mix it up a little bit. Keep her off balanced. She's so explosive and so powerful and with that, she just is just so quick. We threw different people at her. (Fulwiley) was on her one minute and got a couple of steals, then Jada (Richard) and Bella (Hines), Mikaylah (Williams), anybody we could. Giving her different bodies to look at. You're not going to guard her 1-on-1. We made sure when she turned a corner, somebody else is there to help."

"God bless this child with speed. I wouldn't want to be on the floor with her because when she takes off, you better put it in high gear. She'll find you and a lot of times, honestly, she looks to pass too much. She needs to get to the rim and finish and draw fouls."

Padres Reacts Survey: Has your opinion of the Padres’ offseason changed?
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Padres fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
San Diego Padres fans were asked how they would rate the San Diego offseason on a Padres Reacts Survey on Jan. 13. The majority of respondents – 59 percent – said the offseason for the Padres was worse than expected, followed by about as expected – 36 percent – and better than expected – five percent.
Since that poll from Gaslamp Ball, San Diego has made several additions to the roster, but none of the additions were headline deals. Instead, Padres president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller has been adding to the roster with one-year major league deals and multiple minor league deals with invites to Spring Training.
Pessimists will say Preller is dumpster diving and hoping to find someone salvageable, especially among the pitchers. Optimists will say Preller has an eye for talent and the combination of ability with the tutelage of pitching coach Ruben Niebla is bound to deliver at least one success story from the group. For the Friar Faithful who find themselves between the two groups, the wait and see approach allows them to bide their time before passing judgement.
The position player additions have been perceived in largely the same manner. Miguel Andujar was largely thought to be a good signing, but there are questions about his role on defense. The big-name addition, Nick Castellanos who was signed for the major league minimum after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies, has had a lukewarm reception due to clubhouse concerns and declining numbers. Ty France, who was recently signed to a minor league deal, is known for his defense, but has not had much success at the plate.
Perhaps the biggest move of the offseason came Monday when the Padres announced a multi-year extension for Preller to remain with the team following the 2026 season. Like the players, this move will be and has been discussed positively and negatively among the fans, but it would seem based on their comments the players are in full support of Preller and what he has accomplished to this point in San Diego.
With all that said, this week’s Padres Reacts Survey wants to know if your opinion of the offseason has changed with the various moves that have taken place since the previous poll. Results will be revealed later this week.

Insider reveals Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams chances of trading for Tarik Skubal as Spring Training gets underway
Insider reveals Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams chances of trading for Tarik Skubal as Spring Training gets underway originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Tarik Skubal’s future continues to be up in the air, and MLB insider Jayson Stark recently offered an updated check on the Detroit Tigers ace, which shows where teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers stand in the sweepstakes.
While speculation around Skubal has been a thing for a few months, Stark wrote that there’s no indication Detroit is ready to make a move.
“Nothing about the current vibe around the Tigers suggests that they’re seriously considering moving Skubal this spring. But who knows where this is leading? He’s flooring it down the road to the richest free-agent pitching contract ever next winter,” he wrote.
“But is that happening in Detroit? Seems like an awful bet. Meanwhile, is it possible there will be lingering issues from his historic win in arbitration?”
Stark’s reporting shows what’s going on with Skubal’s situation. On the one hand, Detroit still controls an ace entering his prime, the type of arm that franchises rarely move. On the other hand, his value and free agency in 2026 raise long-term financial questions.
The Tigers are very unlikely to pay him unless he takes a pay cut, which we know won’t happen with the best pitcher in the world.
For big-market contenders like the Dodgers, there’s always a way for them to get in the mix. It sounds scary to a lot of teams in baseball, but Los Angeles has enough in its farm system to put together a competitive deal.
