Canada, Penguins Receive Sidney Crosby Injury Update Before Olympics … — and more

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby missed Team Canada’s Olympics semifinals win vs. Finland on Friday due to a lower-body injury.

The 38-year-old could return to the lineup for Sunday’s gold medal game against the United States, however.

Crosby skated in Canada’s practice Saturday and head coach Jon Cooper addressed Crosby’s status afterward.

“I watched him skate today,” Cooper told reporters on Saturday in Milan, according to Penguins reporter King Jemison of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We’re going to meet tonight and have a determination of what’s going to happen tomorrow. He won’t put himself in harm’s way, and he’s not going to put the team in harm’s way.”

The future Hall-of-Famer suffered the injury during team Canada’s quarterfinal victory vs. Czechia on Wednesday.

Opening faceoff for Sunday’s finals contest is set for 8:10 a.m. ET and the Penguins return to the ice on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils.

Crosby — who scored the game-winning goal in overtime during Canada’s gold medal tilt vs. the U.S. at the 2010 Winter Olympics — has played in each of Pittsburgh’s first 56 contests and leads the Penguins in goals (27), assists (32) and points (59).
