Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger cautions Pittsburgh from drafting a QB

There is a real possibility that when the Pittsburgh Steelers go on the clock in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft, they could select a quarterback. In all likelihood, that quarterback would be Alabama's Ty Simpson, who is a fringe first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger talked about this on his podcast this week and made it clear he didn't think the Steelers should use a first-round pick on a quarterback this year and made his argument very clear.

"It seems like, again, I'm still, I'm still, very, very strongly going against getting a quarterback in the first round," Roethlisberger said. "I wouldn't even get one in the second round, personally. If you've got those third-rounds and you're not gonna do something with them, if you wanna try and grab someone in the third round you really like, maybe there? I wouldn't package my third-rounders to move up to get a second-round quarterback. I would not mess with a quarterback this draft. Unless, again, you wanna just stack one of the late third- or fourth-rounds. Just someone to compete to have extra bodies, one of those whatevers, you know?"

The reality of the situation is that the Steelers are only going to be competitive in 2026if they hit on a free-agent quarterback. Whether that's a return for Aaron Rodgers or signing a veteran, this is the team's best chance to make new head coach Mike McCarthy's first season a successful one.
