Proposed Yankees trade New York part ways with Jasson Dominguez, land package centered around MLB's No. 98 overall prospect originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees solidified their starting outfield when they re-signed Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, but that does leave them with a problem: what to do with Jasson Dominguez. They could leave him on the bench for another year, but that could stunt his growth, and end up hurting them.
Another idea is to part ways with him via trade. Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes in that idea, and proposes the Yankees get a couple prospects from the St. Louis Cardinals for him.
The trade would look like this:
Yankees get: No. 98 overall C Leonardo Bernal, Cardinals No. 15 RHP Tink Hence
Cardinals get: OF Jasson Dominguez
“Domínguez has seen substantial time in the Majors at this point, however, without much meaningful growth. He's only 22 and he's clearly an exceptional talent, but until his outfield reads improve and he learns to consistently hit left-handed pitching, it will be hard for Domínguez to deliver on his former promise as a top prospect…This is a kind of buy low opportunity for the Yankees as well. Tink Hence is a former top-100 prospect who generated massive hype in his early years with the Cardinals farm system…As for Leonardo Bernal, he's the rare switch-hitting catcher, exhibiting good contact skills from the left side and more power from the right side. More dependably, he's a phenomenal backstop with a knack for framing strikes and sniping would-be base stealers…You can never have too much pitching depth and quality catchers are hard to come by. If the Yankees can get both for their fifth or sixth outfielder, that's a win,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Henk went from Rookie ball to AA, and posted a 2.95 ERA, 24 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.219 over 21 innings pitched. As for Bernal, he slashed .247/.332/.394/.726 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs, and 70 RBI in 107 games.
Both of these guys could be knocking on the Major League door soon, and probably offer more than Dominguez can at the moment. If the Yanks are smart, they’ll try to work a deal as soon as they can.
