Ex-Jets lineman Damien Woody already stumping for Kyler Murray: ‘He’s no scrub’

Damien Woody made it clear who he wants the Jets to target at quarterback.

“Jets fans, let’s make this clear….Kyler Murray is the QB1 in the FA market,” Woody, a former offensive lineman and current ESPN NFL analyst who played three seasons with the Jets, wrote on X on Tuesday. “He’s no scrub & if you could handle Justin Fields at QB then you can can damn well handle Kyler, who is a MUCH better QB.”

The Cardinals informed Murray they will cut him on the first day of the new league year next Wednesday, ESPN reported, barring a trade.

Murray later confirmed that his Cardinals tenure will come to an end.

“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Murray wrote on X. “I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best.

“I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it.”

Murray, whom the Cardinals drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, played the last seven seasons with the Cardinals.

The Jets’ quarterback situation is murky.

Holding the No. 2 and No. 16 picks in the first round of this year’s draft, they are not in a position to land Fernando Mendoza, the consensus best quarterback in this draft.

They could be in a position to draft a less-heralded quarterback prospect, like Ty Simpson, with the No. 16 pick.

The list of potential free agents is uninspiring — Malik Willis, a reunion with Geno Smith, Derek Carr (who might come out of retirement), Russell Wilson and others.

The Dolphins could look to trade Tua Tagovailoa, making him another potential option.

The Jets are expected to cut Justin Fields, who entered last season as their starter, according to The Post’s Brian Costello.

Murray could likely be signed for cheap, since the Cardinals will still be paying him.
