Fans hoping to learn where the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will take place will have to exercise a bit of patience.
In a press conference from Calgary on Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters that a decision on a host location will be made “in the not too distant future,” but that the league isn’t ready on a decision just yet.
Bettman added that the NHL may have a decision within a “couple of weeks,” as it continues to examine submitted bids, but did not want to give a firm timeline.
“When the process is complete, and we’re ready to make an announcement, we will,” he said.
Calgary is among the cities under consideration to host the 2028 showcase of best-on-best. Bettman took a tour with Flames ownership on Sunday, visiting the franchise’s new arena that’s currently under construction.
Despite the timing of the commissioner’s visit, he remained non-committal on Calgary’s or any other city’s viability to host the World Cup of Hockey in Feb. 2028.
Slated to open in the fall of 2027, the $1.2 billion event centre in Calgary could be an ideal setting for some much-anticipated international hockey.
