Brooks Koepka and Max Homa both put together excellent second rounds at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday.
Koepka opened with a 74 on Thursday, while Homa shot 73 to start the tournament.
But both players bounced back well with matching 66s on Friday at PGA National.
Koepka’s strong second round at the Cognizant Classic, coupled with his confident comments on Friday, suggest he is poised to win again very soon.
Brooks Koepka’s mentality shows what sets him apart from Max Homa
The five-time major winner spoke with the media after his round of 66 to talk through where he feels his game is at right now.
Koepka had some work to do following a 74 on the opening day, but a strong second round saw him move inside the cut-line and into the weekend.
He was then asked if making the cut felt like any sort of achievement, even a minor one.
“No,” the 35-year-old replied.
“If I’m out here to try to make cuts, I’m probably done.”
That response sums up why Koepka has five major titles under his belt.
Homa, meanwhile, is still looking for his first major win, and there is something about how he approaches situations that feels different from Koepka’s mindset.
How Max Homa sees things differently from Brooks Koepka
Just like the former LIV Golf star, Homa was asked whether making the cut felt like a ‘small win’ after his second round at the Cognizant Classic on Friday.
But his answer had a very different tone to Koepka’s.
Homa said: “Yeah, especially just kind of how down I was yesterday about it.
“It felt like a win for sure. I was really happy with the way I played, too. I felt like I played too good yesterday to be outside, so it was nice to bounce back.”
Hearing both answers side by side highlights what separates these two players. Koepka brushed off the question entirely while Homa took satisfaction from getting through.
You cannot teach that difference in mindset, and even after all these years on tour, Koepka still has an edge that sets him apart.
