The Bills have been evaluating talent at the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis this week. One of the positions of greatest need that the team has been looking at is at wide receiver.
Injuries and underperformance inconsistencies have been issues in Joe Brady's offense, where most of their pass-catching targets receive fewer in-game reps in favor of distribution to leverage unpredictability against opponents.
Since the departure of WR1 Stefon Diggs, the team has yet to find a replacement, and as they seek to add talent at the position that meshes well with quarterback Josh Allen, having options with versatility is also a priority.
"Like any quarterback, [Allen] wants 'em to be where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be, and he wants 'em dependable," GM Brandon Beane said. "Obviously, he wants them to catch the ball, but Josh is usually 'give me what you got, and I'll make the most of it.' And so, I think it's my job and our job to find as many versatile skill sets at receiver as we can."
On “The Pat McAfee Show,” he shared what he and the team representing the Bills at this week's combine in Indianapolis have already met with a few players at the position.
"There are some good wide receivers in this draft, and we've interviewed a few," Beane noted. He also provided insight when asked about wide receivers and what the Bills look for.
“Position-less players. Can you play inside, can you play outside? That way, when we break the huddle, we can look around for the right mismatch.”
He emphasized the alignment the team has in their approach on this.
"[Head coach] Joe [Brady] and I are in lockstep on this. We just want to find good players separate of the scheme."
Brady spoke on the topic as well this week, providing insight as the offensive playcaller and head coach from the NFL combine.
"The biggest thing about wide receiver play is no two receivers are the exact same, so I think understanding their type of skill sets and seeing what those kind of look like in specific drills," he shared. "There's some guys that are naturally quicker. I hope to see that quickness in some of the drills. Some guys are straight line speed that they might struggle in a shuttle drill or what not. But, to me, I like the combine to really understand the personality, what makes them tick."
Above all, he's looking beyond on-field abilities to on and off the field, all-around qualities as football players.
"I just want football players who love ball," Brady added. "I'm trying to get an opportunity to just kind of connect with them, understand that look, you can test really well, and I hope those guys do that, but you are what you put on tape as well. And I'm going to take that way more into consideration."
He also added that he wants to utilize the team's current talent in the passing game, such as Bills leading receiver, Khalil Shakir, more as well.
“Just finding different ways to utilize the guys where it’s not the same year in and year out, and I think Khalil can play inside and outside," the HC noted. “We have to continue to grow his game because he’s such a huge component to our offense.”
