Oviedo’s Velocity Drops 2.5 mph, Red Sox Stay Confident

Johan Oviedo’s 4‑seam fastballs averaged 93 mph in his first regular‑season start, 2.5 mph slower than last year, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora says he’s healthy.

In an 8‑1 loss to the Astros, Oviedo gave up four runs, six hits (two homers), one walk and struck out three over 3 2/3 innings. His 4‑seam fastballs averaged 93.0 mph, down from 95.5 mph last season.

Despite the velocity drop, manager Alex Cora said the pitcher is healthy and will be used as a long reliever. Oviedo, who missed 2024 after Tommy John surgery and a lat strain, remains a key part of Boston’s bullpen plan.
