The 21-year-old American-born forward, born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin to Bosnian parents, calmly converted his penalty in the shootout after the match ended 1-1. Bajraktarević, who initially played for U.S. youth teams before switching to represent Bosnia, celebrated by tearing off his jersey and sprinting for the sidelines as teammates mobbed him.
The victory sends Bosnia to its second World Cup, following an appearance in Brazil in 2014. Several other Bosnian team members were also born in other countries but chose to represent Bosnia internationally.
