The 21-year-old arrives at the club having come through the academy ranks at Stellenbosch, where he went on to make 72 appearances, while scoring 11 goals and registered two assists.

The highly-rated winger has become the latest player to join the club and will link up with his new teammates as they prepare for the upcoming MTN8 competition.

“The 21-year-old sensation arrives at Amakhosi after a standout campaign last season in which he finished as Stellenbosch’s top scorer, netting nine goals and bagging both the player-of-the-season and players’-player-of-the-season awards. His performances earned widespread recognition and underlined his reputation as one of the most promising attacking talents in South African football.

“Durban-born Phili has already accumulated valuable experience in his short career so far, having played 39 matches in the PSL and CAF Confederation Cup last season, demonstrating a level of consistency that was earmarked by the technical team as a major potential asset in meeting the demands of a marathon campaign that could see the Glamour Boys contesting more than 50 fixtures across domestic and continental competitions.

“His talent, work ethic and commitment have seen him become a key member of the national age-group structures. He was part of the team that lifted the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Morocco last year and was recently called up to the national U-23 squad as they prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where the winners will play in the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

New Zealand legend Zinzan Brooke says the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series could hinge on just one moment in a match, such as his famous 1996 drop goal at Loftus Versfeld.

Brooke, who played in the All Blacks’ 1996 series victory over the Springboks in South Africa, was speaking in a wide-ranging interview with RugbyPass ahead of an epic four matches between the world’s top two teams.

The former No 8 produced one of the great highlights of that tour, landing a long-range drop goal in the second Test in Pretoria as the Kiwis secured a 2-1 series win.

“There wasn’t a prearranged call, just me shouting louder and louder ‘Marshy, Marshy, Marshy [scrumhalf Justin Marshall] and he gave me the ball,” the 58-cap Brooke said.

“[Centre] Frank Bunce got us over the advantage line and I looked at the clock with less than 10 minutes left and I thought if I get this drop goal we would be seven points ahead. I knew I could kick it, and job done.”

He believes those actions could again prove decisive when the All Blacks face the Boks across four Tests, with the tour starting against the Stormers in Cape Town on Friday before clashes with the Sharks, Vodacom Bulls and Lions.

FORMER ALL BLACK: We didn’t need a fourth Test

“It is feasible for the All Blacks to win the series but it comes back to that first Test which is absolutely critical,” the 61-year-old said.

“The Springboks have set a benchmark and it’s all about knocking them off and if you create the opportunity to kick a drop goal then you have to take it.”

Brooke also warned the All Blacks must manage the demands of an eight-match tour with a 44-man squad.

“My major concern is that with 44 players in the squad you are going to have to ensure there is friendship and camaraderie created so that there is a real bond.”

Tomorrow, the hallowed grounds of Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, will once again become a forge for greatness. The 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, running from August 5th to the 9^th, are not merely a youth tournament. They are the whispering prologue to the roar of future Olympic stadiums.

Here, upon the synthetic rubber track, the fleeting energy of youth is spun into the gold of immortality. This event has always been the ultimate window into the future, offering a breathtaking preview of the next generation of athletes poised to move into the senior ranks, become household names, and reign as future World and Olympic champions.

For Team South Africa, the U20 stage is sacred ground. It is the soil from which legends are grown.

A Golden Legacy Forged in Youth

Historically, South Africa has excelled on the junior global stage. Placing 10th on the all-time medals table, the nation has amassed 62 U20 World Championship medals, 24 of which are gold. The list of past champions reads like a Hall of Fame of South African athletics.

Before he bounded his way into the hearts of the nation, legendary long jumper Luvo Manyonga took gold in Moncton back in 2010 with a distance of 7.99m. Greats like Frantz Kruger (Discus, 1994), Godfrey Mokoena (Triple Jump, 2004), and LJ van Zyl (400m Hurdles, 2002) all tasted global supremacy as teenagers before translating that early promise into senior-level stardom and Olympic medals.

More recently, Lythe Pillay claimed the men’s 400m crown in Cali in 2022, while the formidable Miné de Klerk dominated the women’s shot put in consecutive championships (Nairobi 2021 and Cali 2022, throwing 17.17m in the latter).

The Sprint Kings of Lima: Walaza and Okon

But it is the echoes of the last championships in Lima (2024) that still ring loudest in the sprinting world. Two years ago, the South African team executed a devastating sweep of the men’s sprint titles, capturing the nation’s only three gold medals of the competition.

The crown jewel was Bayanda Walaza, a young man whose feet barely seemed to touch the earth. He completed a magnificent double, winning the 100m in a blistering 10.19 seconds and the 200m in 20.52 seconds. Since that golden week in Peru, Walaza’s trajectory has been nothing short of poetic. He has seamlessly transitioned from a junior sensation to a senior titan. Today, he is a fully-fledged Olympian, a World Relay Champion, a World University Champion, and a man who has spectacularly shattered the legendary sub-10-second barrier in the 100m four times at the senior level.

He did not walk the golden path in Lima alone. Udeme Okon ensured a South African treble by obliterating the field in the men’s 400m, taking the gold in 45.69 seconds. Both young men proved that the U20 Championships are not just a stepping stone, they are a launching pad to the stars.

As the sun rises over Eugene tomorrow, a new battalion of South African athletes will step onto the track.
