حظي الحكم الدولي خميس المري باستقبال مميز بالورود لدى وصوله إلى مطار حمد الدولي أمس، عقب عودته من امريكا بعد مشاركته التاريخية في بطولة كأس العالم 2026، التي شهدت حضورًا لافتًا للتحكيم القطري على الساحة العالمية.
وجاء الاستقبال تقديرًا للإنجاز الذي حققه المري، بعدما شارك ضمن الأطقم التحكيمية في 11 مباراة خلال منافسات المونديال، في واحدة من أبرز المشاركات في تاريخ التحكيم القطري بكأس العالم. وتنوعت مهام المري خلال البطولة، حيث تولى مسؤولية حكم الفيديو المساعد (VAR) في خمس مباريات، وعمل مساعدًا لحكم الفيديو (AVAR) في مباراتين، إلى جانب أداء مهام مشرف على حكام تقنية الفيديو (VAR Supervisor) في أربع مباريات، وهو ما يعكس الثقة الكبيرة التي أولتها لجنة الحكام بالاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (فيفا) للكفاءة التحكيمية القطرية.
وكان أبرز محطات مشاركة المري اختياره ضمن طاقم حكام المباراة النهائية التي جمعت بين منتخبي إسبانيا والأرجنتين، في إنجاز جديد يضاف إلى سجل التحكيم القطري، ويؤكد المكانة المرموقة التي وصلت إليها الكوادر التحكيمية القطرية على المستوى الدولي.
وتأتي مشاركة خميس المري، إلى جانب الحكم الدولي عبد الرحمن الجاسم والحكمين المساعدين طالب سالم وسعود أحمد، لتؤكد نجاح منظومة التحكيم القطرية في تقديم مستويات متميزة خلال أكبر حدث كروي في العالم، في ظل العمل المتواصل الذي تقوم به لجنة الحكام بالاتحاد القطري لكرة القدم برئاسة هاني طالب بلان، نائب رئيس لجنة الحكام بالاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم، والذي أثمر عن حضور مشرف للصافرة القطرية في مونديال 2026.

London: Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has saluted Kevin Keegan for building Newcastle's "greatest team" following his old rival's death aged 75.

Ferguson and Keegan were involved a fierce battle for Premier League supremacy, with United famously pipping Newcastle to the title in 1996.

Frustrated by Ferguson's comments in the media towards the end of that tense title fight, Keegan memorably ranted at the Scot in a iconic television interview.

But despite that row, Ferguson remained friendly with former Liverpool and England striker Keegan, who earned his admiration with an impressive rebuilding job at Newcastle.

The Magpies were in danger of relegation to the third tier when Keegan took over, but he saved them from relegation before winning promotion to the Premier League in 1993.

Keegan made Newcastle so dynamic that they were dubbed "the entertainers" for an eye-catching style that pushed Ferguson's team all the way in the title race.

"I had the utmost respect for him. We had many duels when he was manager of Newcastle, but I have to say the job he did at Newcastle was fantastic," Ferguson told Track Radio on Tuesday.

"He re-energised that club and he brought that enthusiasm and fanaticism that great supporters can give. That's the job he did.

"And he also brought three great players to the club - (David) Ginola, (Faustino) Asprilla, Philippe Albert - and added a bit of class to the team, and I must say the challenges we had with Newcastle at that time at United were huge."

'Emotion and excitement'

Although Newcastle did not win the title under Keegan, who eventually quit in 1997, Ferguson believes the title runners-up were the best team in the club's history.

"Kevin carried the love of the game on his sleeve, there's no question about that, and that carried right on to the fans, to the players," he said.

"That period at Newcastle was of emotion, it was excitement. They brought these great players to the club too and they added to it, and it gave Newcastle - I think - their best ever team."

Keegan's passion boiled over in April 1996 during his emotional blast at Ferguson, whose mind games had rattled the manager, during a Sky Sports interview following a Newcastle win at Leeds.

"I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that," Keegan said jabbing his finger towards the camera.

"We have not resorted to that. You can tell him (Ferguson) now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it."

Keegan's rallying cry didn't stop Newcastle blowing a 12-point lead as United took the title.

However, Ferguson revealed the pair bumped into each other near Wentworth Golf Club a few weeks after that season.

They spent the night around a piano with all thoughts of the rivalry forgotten.

"The great thing about him, he held no grudges. That was a fantastic quality he had and we had a great night," Ferguson said.

"All aside whatever happened in previous weeks, that was soon forgotten. I really respected him for that."

Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Stars League (QSL) announced the QSL 2 League schedule for 2026-2027 season, which will kick off on August 23.

A total of 12 teams will be competing next season; Al Khor, Al Markhiya, Al Bidda, Mesaimeer, Muaither, Al Kharaitiyat, Umm Salal, Al Waab, NextGen (Al Rayyan), Etihad Al Gharafa, Al Shamal Future and Qatar Under-23 National Team.

The announcement of the schedule was part of QSL's preparations for the new season, ensuring that competitions had the highest organizational and technical standards.

In the context of QSL's commitment to providing the best technical and organizational conditions for the start of the season, the first three rounds of matches will be played in air-conditioned stadiums, providing an ideal environment for players and fans, and enhancing the quality of competition during this time of year.

The first three rounds of matches will be hosted by Al Thumama Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium and Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

The first round of the tournament will be held over three days, with Al Khor and Al Markhiya opening the matches when they meet at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium on Aug. 23, and on the same day Al Bidda will face Al Gharafa at Lusail Stadium. The following day, Mesaimeer will meet Muaither at Al-Thumama Stadium, while Al Shamal will face Al Kharaitiyat at Khalifa International Stadium. The round will conclude on Aug. 25 with two matches: Umm Salal will meet the Qatari Under-23 National Team at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, and Al Waab will meet Al Rayyan Next Generation at Al-Bayt Stadium.
