Iniesta talks Laporta, Barcelona elections, Lamine, Ballon d’Or – ‘Has everything he needs to achieve it’

Speaking to the media earlier today, FC Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta discussed various matters related to his former club, including the upcoming presidential elections.

Iniesta, who left Barça in 2018 and retired from the game in 2024, expressed his admiration for Hansi Flick’s team, while backing them to win the La Liga title race.

“For me, Barça are still the favourite. They’re back in first place, and we’ll see if they can hold on until the end. It’ll definitely be competitive; La Liga is always competitive. I hope Barça wins the title again,” he noted.

The Barcelona great then spoke about teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, backing him to win the Ballon d’Or sooner rather than later, after he finished second in last year’s rankings.

“It’s a matter of him continuing to improve. He has the talent to do it, he has the work ethic to do it, it’s an important challenge for him,” said Iniesta.

“He has everything he needs to achieve it, hopefully, he continues this evolution he’s showing because it’s very positive, especially for Barça fans and for Spaniards in general, to have a player of that calibre.”

On the elections

With the Barça presidential elections set to take place on 15 March, there have been speculations about how his former teammate Lionel Messi may or may not play a role.

On being asked if he would have a role in any of the candidates’ campaign, Iniesta replied:

“A small role. As members, we will contribute to a day like that, which I believe is important for Barça, and from there, as I always say, the best thing for Barça is what the members choose.”

Iniesta also confirmed that he will be voting, saying: “Yes, yes, as I always have when I’ve been able to.”

However, he stated he will not reveal whom he voted for: “It’s usually private.”

Meanwhile, Iniesta also spoke about the complaint filed by a Barça socio against Joan Laporta relating to money laundering and commission payments, saying:

“Each member will try, or we will try, to interpret what we believe is best, and from there, each person’s vote will be what’s best for Barça, regardless of what might happen.

“As always, this isn’t anything new when these kinds of situations arise. Ultimately, the best thing for the club is what matters.”
