Former UFC fighter CM Punk has offered his perspective on Ronda Rousey’s planned MMA return against Gina Carano.
CM Punk discussed the matchup in a recent interview, addressing the bout between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano scheduled for May 16, 2026, at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.
The contest will headline a Netflix event and represents a comeback moment for both fighters after an extended time away from competition. Punk expressed interest in the fight but emphasized the challenges tied to long layoffs.
Punk weighs difficulty of returning after long absence
Ronda Rousey, 39, has not fought in MMA since her December 2016 loss to Amanda Nunes, while Carano has been out of the sport since 2009.
Punk pointed to the physical demands of competing later in a career, particularly after years away from active competition.
“I think it’s great. We’re gonna find out if she’s still got it. I think fighting at an older age, trust me, I am an expert on this.”
“It’s not the easiest thing to do, but she’s fighting somebody who is age comparable, who also has had a long layoff. Both big names, both big superstars. I think people are gonna tune in to watch this, and I know I will.”
High-profile return set for Netflix showcase
Punk, who went 0-2 during his time in the UFC, spoke from personal experience about the adjustment required to step back into the cage.
The event is being promoted by Most Valuable Promotions and will stream live on Netflix, marking a notable expansion into live MMA broadcasting for the platform.
The fight is scheduled as a featherweight bout at 145 pounds. Carano, considered one of the early stars of women’s MMA, last competed in June 2009 in Strikeforce.
The matchup brings together two recognizable figures from different eras, creating intrigue about how each will perform in their respective returns.
