The New York Mets splurged on a ton of talent this offseason, adding stars to the bullpen, rotation and especially the lineup.

Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil are all gone, while Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien and, most importantly, Bo Bichette have joined the Mets roster.

But Mets fans should be concerned with Bichette already. Not because of his offense, but more so because of his defense, which was full of lowlights in a viral video that doesn't instill confidence in Bichette manning the hot corner this year for the Mets.

Bo Bichette's defensive struggles should worry Mets fans

In the video, shared by Atlanta Braves fan MFE on X, Bichette can be seen struggling to field the ball properly. Sometimes he doesn't cleanly field it, and other times it bounces off his glove. But one of the more worrying parts was his footwork.

He's not attacking the ground balls coming his way, letting them get to him instead, and making mistakes more likely due to getting beaten by the ball.

Before he even stepped onto the field for the Mets, there were going to be concerns about his defense.

According to Baseball Savant's Fielding Run Value, Bichette had a -10, which tied for the 11th-worst mark among all fielders last season, and the worst among all infielders in 2025.

Bichette's page on Baseball Savant shows a great offensive presence, but a very poor fielder. He's in the 1st percentile in Outs Above Average, and his arm strength is ranked in the 36th percentile.

With his struggles fielding the ball, as seen in the viral video, and the statistics which highlight struggles with range, and a mediocre arm that will only be worse with his move to third base, there's plenty of reason to be concerned about Bichette.

His defense was always going to be an issue the Mets had to deal with, but this viral video doesn't help dissuade those concerns.

Hopefully for the Mets, Bichette gets more comfortable at third base over time. It's entirely possible, but for now, there's ample reason to be worried about how the defense at the hot corner will fare in 2026 with $126 million Bichette manning the position.
