8 former or current Ohio State women's hockey players win medals

There was a little Scarlet and Gray hue to the women's Olympic hockey podium on Thursday. All told, eight former or current Ohio State women's hockey players earned medals with the completion of the Gold and Bronze medal contests on Wednesday in Milan, Italy.

Three Buckeyes were a part of the Team USA squad that won 2-1 in overtime against rival Canada, all playing a significant role during the tournament. Current Buckeye, Joy Dunne, along with former OSU players Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka, will be returning as gold medalists thanks to a dominating run through the Olympic tournament in which the Americans won every single game, the only close one coming against the Canadians to bring home the gold.

Speaking of Team Canada, four former Ohio State players helped the team to the silver medal. Jenn Gardiner, Sophie Jaques, Emma Maltais, and Natalie Spooner all contributed to the run for our neighbors to the north. Gardiner and Spooner each scored a goal during the tournament, while Jaques and Maltais notched assists during the run.

Last, but not forgotten, former OSU goalie and current Switzerland net-minder led the Swiss to the bronze medal. She allowed just one goal against Sweden in the bronze medal game to help her team to a 2-1 overtime win against Sweden. She had an outstanding tournament, stopping 161 of 169 shots.

I can only imagine the welcoming Dunne will get when she resumes her play with Ohio State. Maybe, just maybe, there will be more hardware in the future, this time as the Buckeyes look to contend for a national championship.
